While this site has maintained a consistent look throughout its whole operation, there were a couple of weeks where it looked very different from what it is now.

Originally, this site was designed to require a browser capable of HTML4 and CSS, as I wasn't certain I would be able to get the exact design I wanted if I went any earlier. Just weeks after the site's launch, a lot of people started complaining about how it didn't look correct on IE3 and earlier, and so I had to go back and completely revise every single page on the site.

There were some significant compromises I had to make, including settling on a dark background color scheme with white text because Internet Explorer 1 and other ancient browsers did not support the <table> element, which I had been using to give the main body black-on-white text. Nonetheless, I got it all put in place on the 21st of October and have stuck with it ever since.

PHP has really come in handy to provide various quality of life improvements in managing my site. For what CSS can't cover on old browsers, PHP can do quite a bit to automate certain tedious formatting tasks, and it's also the reason why the following year, I was able to implement a so-called "light mode" without so much trouble, for those who wanted the brighter background.
