Yesterday I saw GameXplain's reedit of the trailer. The repeated voices throw me off, but the use of the SMB3 airship theme was dead on. I don't know how it never crossed my mind; they had the perfect tracks right there, all that was needed was some arranging to make it unique for the movie. For something that would be as monumental as a new Mario movie, the last thing you want to throw in is generic dramatic soundtrack that disavows countless years of real background music. Seriously.

So much for the fluff about "Nintendo learned from their mistakes, they wouldn't dare allow Mario's reputation to be tarnished now"... I get the feeling that anyone who's still hyped up for this probably just have Miyamoto's award-winning smile in the back of their heads. Dare I say it, I'd wager that the 1993 movie is going to stand as the better, or rather more memorable one. It's at least likeably bad.

Also... they use the first six notes of the SMB overworld theme from the intro of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!

Of all things, I was first fully introduced to Mario after coming across a Japanese parody video featuring "Keyboard Crasher" (or AGK, though the real title is PC spielen) as the joke. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXaUS7pZAg0)

Back to the topic at hand, the movie looks to be another throwaway CGI eye candy fest made on assembly lines where directive freedom of making movies is essentially nonexistent and is made to blend in with standardized practices that every animated movie must follow (which is why there isn't any western 2D animation playing in mainstream theaters anymore). It doesn't help that Nintendo has been a pain in the ass to try and sympathize with after how they've acted hostile towards fan-made projects with lawyers who still think it's the 80s and that anyone using a tiny piece of their property is considered dirty bootlegging. If I do end up seeing this movie, it will be because someone else is desperately trying to rope me in by force, and nothing more.
