Palette rotation is also applicable to other types of electronic media, particularly video games from around and before this era that use the technique to create flashing or rainbow effects, such as the dragon coins in Super Mario World.

Probably one of the more notable examples of Windows 9x making use of this method is the early Memphis splashes that eliminate the scrolling bar at the bottom and instead opt to make the Windows flag itself flash much in the same way as the "first boot" splash from Windows 95.
